Reds Barbecue Sauce

A vinegar based barbeque sauce recipe with tomatoes, peppers, and onions that gets better the longer it simmers.

Ingredients:

  • 2  Tbsp. garlic powder
  • 3  onions (med.size chopped)
  • 1  cup vinegar
  • 1  cup water
  • 3  12 oz. cans tomato paste
  • 4  28 oz. cans  whole peeled tomatoes
  • 1  bell pepper (med.size chopped)
  • 12 Tbsp. molasses
  • 2  Tbsp. dry mustard
  • 4  bay leaves
  • 1  tsp. cayenne pepper*
  • 1  tsp. allspice(ground)
  • 1  Tbsp. lemon juice (realemon)
  • 1  Tbsp. salt
  • 3  Tbsp. liquid smoke*

Method

Open whole tomatoes and pour contents into a blender adding onions and bell pepper. Run blender on high to liquefy. Pour contents through a strainer while pouring into a large pot (to remove tomato seeds). Add all ingredients and bring to a boil. Reduce to a low heat and let simmer 1 1/2 hours.

Notes: * These ingredients you can add to or reduced to fit your taste. I use hickory or mesquite, and sometimes will mix the 2 together.

Number of servings: makes one gallon
